Our family campsite

Let’s face it. By it’s very nature, camping can be stressful. You are basically relocating your family and belongings into the outdoors, living in primitive conditions, and then relocating everything back home. All this, in the span of a few days. A little longer if you’re lucky! That just sounds stressful! And it can be. But there are some things you can do to make your family camping trip a much more pleasant experience.

My wife's poor little piggy toe!

Those sexy toes belong to my wife. Granted, they are much better looking without all the bandages. And that “push pin” in her pinky toe is actually a 3″ long metal rod. It’s a story of Easter candy,  broken bones and blood. Yes, blood.

Wii

Back in September I asked the question PS3, XBox 360 or Wii – Which Will It Be? I was trying to decide on the right game system for my family. Your overwhelming response was in favor of the Wii. So, in early October, I snatched one of ten from my favorite big box retailer. It was our families big Christmas present.

A major factor in deciding on the Wii was the flexibility in game selections. In addition to all of the Wii sports and exercise games, many traditional PS3 and XBox game titles are also available. We picked up Call of Duty, Madden 09, Star Wars and Tomb Raider. I couldn’t, however, find the ever elusive Mario Cart. Oh, and I’ve been trying! It has been sold out here for months.

Sandy and Me at the Dog-Gonest Dog Show 1993

Our family ventured out for dinner and a movie last night. Well actually, we caught the matinee and then had dinner. Yes, cheap movie tickets and a $10 dinner coupon. I’m lovin it! I know, I’m a miser!

My daughter REALLY wanted to see Marley and Me, so guess what movie we watched? Yup, you guessed it, very good! Overall I would say this was a good movie. AND for anyone who has ever had a life-long canine companion, you will quickly relate and relive some fond (and maybe not so fond!) memories.

It has been several weeks since I have posted anything. I don’t really feel like writing now, but wanted to offer an explanation for my extended hiatus. I would like to thank the faithful who visited and dropped on me even though I wasn’t returning the favor. I just couldn’t. I appreciate it.

Abandoned Teenager

Frustrated parents in Nebraska are abandoning their children at local hospitals. Yes, you read that correctly. Little Johnny didn’t eat his peas? Sassy Marie, mouthing off? Lazy Mickey not taking out the trash? Fear not, just anonymously abandon them at the nearest hospital. That’s it, like dropping off your clothes at the cleaners. Free from prosecution. Smells of bad government gone crazy, again.

My daughters Truck

So today I’m at work and my cell rings. I look and it’s my daughter. That’s strange, I thought, it was only 11:30AM. Then I remembered she was out of school today. I answered and listened to my panicked daughter tell me she had just been in an accident. “Are you OK? Is everyone OK? What happened?”, I nervously asked. As it turned out, she had rear-ended the truck in front of her. This after a third car had cut across three lanes and made a right-hand turn, at 35 MPH, in front of that truck. He nailed the breaks and my daughter slammed into  him. The driver of the car took off. A sort of hit and run.

My broken arm...

I wanted to give you an update on my broken arm and pass on some really important things I have learned over the past several weeks. If you want to read about how I mangled my arm, check it out here. First, I am doing well. Getting better everyday. I have been off of the pain meds for several days. I started with Oxicodone and ended up on a Morphine derivative. What a crazy trip it’s been! Kidding. Well sort of, I did have trouble constructing basic sentences and understanding conversations, among other things. Scary stuff! I am going to see my Orthopedist today for a new X-ray and cast. I am keeping my [left] fingers crossed that all is going well and I will not require surgery. Also, I want to thank everyone who has contacted me and wished me well. It is much appreciated.

Right On!

So, I guess you’re wondering why I look like the poster child for ‘Power to the People’. This is at my doctors insistence. Really, I am supposed to walk around like that. It keeps the swelling down, he tells me. My daughter won’t go anywhere with me! She says, “I’ll go, but you have to keep your arm down!” I agree, then as we are walking in the store, I will slowly raise it into position. “Funny Dad, PUT IT DOWN!” she whispers. I smile and oblige, wait a few minutes, and raise it again.

Atari 2600

I have a question for all you gamers out there. I am thinking about buying a game system for Christmas. I am from the Atari generation. Pac-man. Space Invaders. Asteroids. Missile Command. Pitfall. I wore out at least a dozen joy sticks in my day. I dabbled with the Nintendo in the 90’s (with my son), but am unfamiliar with today’s systems.

A sunflower in our backyard

I can’t believe summer is already over. Well officially it’s not over till the 21st, but in my book it ended Labor Day weekend. Even though the temperature here in beautiful Virginia Beach, Virginia is still in the 90’s. It went fast and we had a blast!
