Ever since my brush with what I thought was a heart problem, I have been reading everything I can about heart disease. My new found interest hits close to… my heart. Yeah, I know, that was bad. Sorry. But seriously, that’s why I was thrilled when Amy Cook contacted me about writing a guest post. AND to add icing to the cake, she has written a fun and informative article about some little known heart disease facts. So grab your liquid of choice, kick your feet up and check it out.
Little Known Facts About Heart Disease
It’s the most important organ in our body, and when it stops, life stops too. All of us are aware of this, but unfortunately, this knowledge doesn’t seem to be enough to boost our efforts to ensure a healthy heart. Heart disease is the biggest killer in the world, and over 40 percent of deaths in the USA are attributed to cardiac arrests. But there are ways to keep your heart healthy and prevent disease and untimely death. When your body is healthy, your heart is healthy too. So if you take good care of your body by eating healthy food, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and negating the effects of stress, your heart will be healthy, hearty and happy. Here are a few little-known facts about heart disease that will help you understand your heart better and take better care of it:
- Both women and men are prone to attacks, but each feels different symptoms during a heart attack. While men feel a searing pain and are more likely to know that it has something to do with their heart, women don’t feel such obvious signs – they have nausea, indigestion and shoulder pain, and this may cause them to delay seeking medical help.
- When it comes to your heart, laughter is indeed the best medicine. When you laugh and are happy, your heart is happy too.
- The next best thing to laughter for your heart is sex, that three letter word without which life would cease to exist. But get this – while it’s been proven that sex and regular orgasms do wonders for the male heart, for the female, the proof of the pudding has to be in the eating. In general, a healthy relationship makes for a good heart, and since sex is known to be a great stress buster, go ahead and have a good time – anything to boost your heart health.
- If you find that you lack the inclination to have sex or if you find it hard to complete the sexual act (low libido or erectile dysfunction), your heart is telling you that it’s time you cleaned your act up and started taking better care of it.
- There’s no safe smoking limit; cigarettes and tobacco are bad news for your heart. So if you’re a smoker, you’re not only destroying your lungs, you’re also hastening your heart to an early death.
- There is no direct relation between your heart and your blood pressure. So if your pressure is normal, that does not mean your heart is ok too, and vice versa.
The reason why heart disease is such a huge killer is that people fail to seek help at the right time when they experience minor chest aches or mild symptoms. The best way to stay safe from heart attacks is to take good care of your heart with a healthy diet, regular exercise and a stress and tobacco-free life, and by calling for help if you feel even the faintest sign of discomfort. As they say, it may be a false alarm, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

I had a scare recently when I went to the Doctor for a check up regarding my diabetes. The Doctor requested that I take a chest xray just as a matter of routine. When it came back and after reviewing it he announced that My heart was enlarged. He forwarded my xray to another Doctor who stated that while larger than “normal” he did not see need for immediate concern. Regular complete exams with blood work should be part of everybody’s annual schedule. Take care my friend. ;o) (Hey, was the beer cold?)

Good thing the doctor ordered the chest x-ray. At least now you have a baseline to go by and your doctor can monitor the situation for changes.
I have never worried about annual exams in the past. It’s ironic that now I see my doctor every 3 months!
I agree blood work should be part of everyone’s annual schedule.
The beer was COLD and GREEN! Thanks for asking my friend. We had a great time!

This struck me- “There is no direct relation between your heart and your blood pressure.” Usually if you think your blood pressure is okay then your heart is also in good condition. So this is just a fallacy then.
Thanks for these ‘Little Known Facts’ . It makes people get more conscious of having and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. We all need to take care of ourselves remembering that we do not own our bodies. We are just merely stewards of this gift of life.

It struck me as well Junezach. I think Amy meant that the two are not necessarily related. In other words, you might have a normal blood pressure, but have another serious heart condition, for instance.
My recent health related events were definatley eye opening and made me realize that you can’t take your health for granted.

Sad but true. Heart diseases can kill you anytime, there is no measure when you will be attacked. You will just notice that you’re heaving a hard time breathing or you fainted. So the best thing you can do – love your heart the way you love the people around you. Eat a proper balanced diet and exercise. Remember prevention is better than cure.

Wow, interesting stats. Diet and exercise are a must to avoid heart problems. I’m still fairly young but have realized already that I can’t wait to change my habits–I have to do it now.
Have you heard the 911 call with the 5-year-old little girl calling while her father is having a heart attack? It’s been on a lot of shows recently–very funny and all turned out alright.

This is some good information, lots of things I had no idea about. My father has heart trouble and has had several heart attacks so I need to be vigilant. I didn’t know that women have different symptoms or that sex is heart healthy! Who knew?

Good post and very interesting. I wondered too about the blood pressure and a heart attack. I also read somewhere that a lot of people have heart attacks with perfectly normal cholesterol and that the cholesterol medicine can have some ill effects on you. I do try to be as healthy as possible and try to get some exercise. Have a great week end.

Panic attacks are one of the most common reasons for unnecessary emergency room visits. Undiagnosed patients can mistake the symptoms of these anxiety episodes for heart attacks, as well as a variety of other serious problems.

No, I haven’t been feeling well for the past week. I slept for 12 hours last night and woke up feeling like I hadn’t slept a wink. Strange, being I usually get about 5 hours and feel great…
Thanks for asking Buggys, nice of you to notice…

Unfortunately, people don’t ever do anything about their health until AFTER they’ve had a heart attack. I worked in cardiac rehab for a while, and saw people from their early forties to their eightites, and they always said the same thing -”If I would have known how good exercise and eating healthy made me feel, I would have started this long ago.” I own a gym, and even telling people who walk in the door about the benefits of exercise in lowering their risk of heart disease, the only thing they really care about it is how much the membership is…and if it’s $5 too much, they don’t want to join. Now how much money would they save in the long run if they were a healthier person? Don’t get me started…: )

I have known people of many ages experience heart issues, from mild attacks, to an enlarged heart, to major attacks. Those who suffered the most sever issues were heavy smokers.
I find it amazing how the body is able to repair itself – so quit smoking, exercise, and start eating better.
