I am what’s known in the grocery business as a “cherry picker”. There, I said it. AND I’m proud of it. I will go into a store and buy only the sale items. And 9 times out of 10, I will have a coupon for the said sale item. I am one of those folks that you have heard about that buys $150.00 worth of groceries for $65.00. Yep, and I ain’t apologizing. So, you can imagine how excited I was a few years ago, when electronic or “digital” coupons were introduced. If not, think ear to ear grin with uncontrollable salivating, followed by bursts of irrational exuberance.
Let me give you a little background for perspective. I worked in the IT department of a regional grocery store chain for nearly 10 years. I can’t tell you how many meetings I sat through where the topic of cherry pickers came up. Let me tell you, we are a HATED BUNCH. The promotions folks or “buyers” as they are known, were continually coming up with schemes to outsmart the cherry pickers. It never works. You can’t outsmart a fox. Particularly when HE is in the hen house. Doh!
So, I have an unfair advantage, I was trained how to maximize savings, by the folks responsible for maximizing profits. One of their main goals in life was trying to figure out how to increase a shoppers impulse buys. Which, if you are paying attention, is one of the ways a store offsets the cherry pickers. There is HUGE margin in most cross-merchandised “impulse buys”. Don’t ever buy items on impulse. In most cases, you will be paying way to much, for something you hadn’t intended to purchase. BAM! They got you! Unless of course you don’t mind throwing your money away. In which case, contact me after the show, and I will hook you up with my Paypal account.
More than 45 million American consumers (more than a fifth of the U.S. population) are now using online coupons. – coupons.com
I have been using the old fashioned paper coupons for ever. I used my first digital coupons just a few short years ago. I was visiting Kroger’s website last week and noticed they are re-launching their Digital Coupon program with a large ad on their home page. Other chains have similar Digital Coupon or Digital Savings programs. What is a Digital Coupon? Thought you would never ask. Digital Coupons are discounts taken at the Point of Sale on items you are purchasing. In most cases you sign up for XYZ’s Savings Card and visit their website. Next you choose the items you are interested in and load up the electronic coupons to your savings card. When you check out at the grocery store, the Digital Coupons are automatically taken off your total when you scan your savings card. Presto! Instant savings!
I use electronic or digital coupons in conjunction with paper coupons and items already on sale. I typically save between 40% to 60% off my total purchase. AND I don’t spend a lot of time doing it. No, I’m not like Mr. Mom, sitting around playing poker for coupons. I clip coupons, pick digital coupons and scan the newspaper ads for items on sale. I then shop the best ads, trying to buy sale items combined with store, vendor and digital coupons. Simple. That’s it.
Coupon usage increased in 2009 for the first time in 17 years – Nielsen
I recently commented on a friends post, a great series of posts, over at Get Out Of Credit Card Debt. Robyn informed me that in Australia, coupons have just not taken off. WOW! Unbelievable! I learned about coupons from my parents. I can’t imagine not using them. BUT, this got me thinking. I am wondering if coupons are common place in other countries around the globe or are they just a US Phenomena? Do you use coupons, either paper or digital?

I had watched a special on TV years back of a person that could walk into a grocery store and actually walk out with not only a cart full of groceries but with more money then she walked in with. I was amazed and it was proven on this tv program but I could not even come close to reproducing the results. I actually wish I could do as well as you. ;o) I guess I will just have to be satisfied with buying bulk at some warehouse club. Take care my friend.

I think I watched the same TV special David. I actually ran the balance due to zero, one time. I was experimenting to see if it could be done. It was on a $20 order, buying only sale items and using store coupons with triple manufacturer coupons. I actually had a balance due of a little over a dollar, but the store manager said he could not refund cash for coupons. So, I gladly accepted the zero balance!
Deals can be found at the warehouse clubs, I love Sams!

There you went ahead and said it, “SAMS”. I love that place. The concession stand especially. There is something about cranking out chopped onions onto a slice of pizza that warms the heart. ;o) (Plus I found the employees friendlier than at that other place.) Take care my friend.

I did not know about these digital coupons. Or at least the part of having a card with digital coupons. But I have not seen any digital coupon programs in the grocery store that I go to. I do look at the coupons online. And I cut them out of the newspaper when they have some. Also I shop at the Walmart for my groceries and pet food and I have found that their products are usually cheaper than some of the items on the coupons. But I have found some great coupons. They are just hard to find. I am going to study all this again because I sure do need to save money. Thanks for this great information John. Wish I could go to the grocery story and get it all for next to nothing.

I just checked Albertsons website…sorry no digital coupons yet. That is one of the worst website’s I have ever seen. They do have, which I suspect you already know, a “Preferred Savings Card”. If you don’t have one, go get one!

Hi John,

That is awesome savings for your family. My husband is just the opposite of you. He likes top brands and doesn’t use coupons. I do like to use paper coupons sometimes. We do spend a lot of money at Walmart. I will have to see if they have the Digital Coupons Program. Thanks for sharing this with us.

I have to admit that I have never used coupons, but digital coupons sure make more sense in today’s world than paper coupons. I agree that Sams has some really great things you can bulk up on

In today’s economy everybody needs to be diligent while out shopping, whether it’s at the grocery store, local Walmart, the pharmacy, etc. Digital coupons are great. I also am aware of the “impulse buy” factor and hate how they put things like candy next to the registers, the kids always want to have it as you stand in line waiting. This is a great article and some great advice.

I’ve been recently trying to get back into it. Years ago, I was really into it. But I feel the coupons were better back then. Now a lot of times you have to buy two or three of the item just to save like 20 cents or something. Those ones are not worth it to me.
I also have recently found some great coupons on Facebook. Many companies on there even give you a coupon for their products free. Like recently Oreos had one- I got a free package of double stuff golden Oreos.
I haven’t heard of digital coupons. Will have to look into it.

I really like getting digital coupons from Seventh Generation. Their products aren’t exactly cheap, so any little bit helps! My mother has always used coupons, and taught me to do so. As a matter of fact, when she sends my birthday card every year, as open it, coupons come falling out! lol
