Getting To The Heart Of The Problem

Stethoscope

As I looked towards the heavens, I felt faint and nearly lost my balance. The baby blue sky was blanketed ever so slightly with puffy white clouds. The sun was high over head. It was a blistering 99 degree day and the air was thick like soup. I had been walking around with a customer, doing an outdoor site-survey. Earlier in the day, I had noticed that it was difficult to breath. I was having to work at it. Not so bad that I felt there was a serious problem, just bothersome. I wrote it off in my mind that it was due to the heat, humidity and the fact that I hadn’t slept well the night before. Just a minor miscalculation on my part.

Don’t Cut In Line, Unless You Think You’re Dying

I left the customers site and drove myself to my Doctor’s office. I arrived to find several people waiting in the lobby. I walked up to the receptionist and asked if I could see my Doctor. She asked what was wrong and I told her. “It feels like someone is standing on my chest and I’m having trouble breathing.” She said, “Please have a seat and I’ll be right back.” In hindsight, I should have noticed the nurses alarmed facial expression. Totally oblivious, I went and grabbed a magazine. I had no sooner sat down, when the nurse called me and said to follow her. As I walked past everyone in the waiting room, I could feel the angry glares as I passed those who had been waiting for some time.

Heart disease caused 26% of deaths—more than one in every four—in the United States – Centers for Disease Control

Cold and Clammy

As I sat down in the observation room, in popped a nurse. She was moving quickly and had me roll up my sleeve. She started to take my pulse, when a bizarre look overcame her face. “You’re cold and clammy…”, she said. “Oh, okay”, I said. I’m thinking, “that’s better than hot and sweaty.” At this point, I’m thinking to myself how clever I am, when the nurse exclaimed “OMG, you have an irregular heartbeat!” Irregular heartbeat? What? She quickly left the room. I could hear her immediately state “He’s cold and clammy and he has an irregular heartbeat, I need an EKG.” EKG? What?

Blurrrrrrrrrr

The next four hours are a bit blurry. They consisted of blood pressure checks, two EKG’s, blood work, oxygen, blood hydration, Doctors, Nurses and lots of poking and prodding. Once they had stabilized my “condition”, my Doctor proceeded to give me a lecture. Apparently, I had no business going to the Doctor. I should have gone straight to the emergency room. Who knew? Seriously, I don’t go to the Doctor very often and I was light headed, as I said. I don’t think I was thinking clearly. Scratch that, I know I wasn’t thinking clearly. That mistake could have cost me, thankfully, it didn’t.

Over the next few days, I had two more EKG’s. My Doctor ordered an Echo Stress test. Talk about feeling like a hamster on a wheel. Ever done one? It was like being a human science experiment. I was all wired up with sensors, with an audience of nurses, watching, while I did the hamster speed walk on a tread mill. Fun, fun, fun!

Doctor, Doctor, Give Me The News

It was a long week, with daily trips to different Doctors and many, many tests. After much anxiety, my blood work came back along with the results of my Echo Stress test. Are you ready…drum roll please…NEGATIVE! All tests came back negative, with regards to any kind of heart problems. Not only that, I passed the echo stress test with flying colors! So, what then caused my irregular heartbeat? Not really sure. One contributing factor might have been too much caffeine. Hence my post, How I Released My Inner Caffeine Fiend. One thing I inconspicuously left out of that post, was that my Doctor had advised that I quit drinking coffee. Sorry, but at the time of that post, I wasn’t ready to talk about it.

I said that “All tests came back negative, with regards to any kind of heart problems.” Key words being “any kind of heart problems.” I wasn’t so lucky across the board. I did receive some very disturbing, life altering news. A diagnosis that could explain many of the symptoms I had experienced earlier in the week. A diagnosis that you are going to have to wait until PART 2 of this post to learn about. :) (because this post is already huge!)

American Heart Month

I decided to tell my story because February is American Heart Month. Since 1963 Congress has required the President to declare February, American Heart Month, in an attempt to raise awareness and get Americans to join the fight against heart disease. Due to my recent scare, I decided to get involved and try to help spread the word about this huge killer.

Heart Disease Facts*

  • According to the CDC, the leading cause of death of both men and women in the United States is heart disease.
  • 631,636 people died of heart disease in 2006.
  • Heart disease will cost the United States $316.4 billion in 2010.

Heart Disease Risk Factors*

1. Conditions

  • High Cholesterol Levels
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Obseity

2. Behaviors

  • Diets high in saturated fats, cholesterol and/or sodium
  • Physical Inactivity
  • Tobacco use
  • Alcohol abuse

3. Heredity – Heart disease can run in your family

5 Heart Healthy Tips

  • Get plenty of exercise
  • Reduce saturated fats
  • Stay Hydrated – Drink water
  • Eat plenty of fruit & vegetables
  • Maintain a healthy weight

My goal here today was to give you something to think about. I hope that I was successful. Do you or anyone you know have any heart problems?

Thank God you are alright John!

I am desperate to have a healthy lifestyle but oftentimes I tend to slack and forget about it. Your post reminds me again of taking good care of myself. The difficult thing there is would be having the heart to do it with determination. As one person said “The heart of the problem is the problem of the heart.”

Thanks Junezach. Me too! Yes, it is easy to get off track when it comes to taking care of oneself. I know, happens to me all the time! We all just need a little reminder! Glad I was able to fill that roll for you this AM.

“The heart of the problem is the problem of the heart.” – interesting. This is absolutely correct. As with any difficult endeavor, if your heart’s not in it, it’s terribly difficult to succeed at anything, whether it be quitting smoking, losing weight or cutting down on caffeine. Great point ZUnzach!

    Hi John,
Glad your tests came back negative. I do not drink coffee. I do wonder what was causing your Irregular heartbeat. Thanks for sharing Heart Disease Risk Factors and 5 Heart Healthy Tips with us.

I was experiencing a pain in my chest in 2009. It did scare me and I finally went to the doctor and he sent me to the hospital for all kinds of tests. I did have a EKG, an ultrasound on my heart, which was really neat to see my heart beating and clapping back and forth. There was another test where I had to drink some kind of white chalky stuff, did not taste good at all. I had blood work too and my blood pressure was good.

I was told that my heart was good, (thank God), but I had some small acid reflux which can cause heart burn. When I eat certain foods, this can act up. I do know that I get stressed out over the bills sometimes and I should just try and calm down. Lack of sleep isn’t helping either.

Thank you Robin. It sounds like you went through much the same battery of tests that I did. I had the heart ultra sound as well. That was very cool to see me “heart beating and clapping back and forth”. Sitting in that Doctors office, thinking I had a heart condition, was one of the scariest times of my life. Thank goodness everything came back fine, with regards to my heart. Glad to hear your heart is good, as well. Did the doctor put you on any meds for the acid reflux?

Thanks as always for the thoughtful comment. Your support is much appreciated. Take care. :)

Thanks John for all those reminders. I have started to increase my exercise because my blood pressure is somewhat up right now. My health is a long story so won’t go into it now but that was great information. That was great that you had a post like that and glad to hear that you are all right as far as your heart goes. Sure glad it wasn’t a heart attack.

But, thanks a lot, now because of YOU, and this post, I’m “positive”, I should go to the Doctor!

The check-list above, I might as well use my magic-marker, and just go “yep”, yep, yep, yep,…

And, to think I wanted to get “certain things”, accomplished today!

Thanks a lot, Mr. Family Man, gotta go 8>/

Great and informative post. My husband has had two hamster wheel tests in the last 10 years. His father had his first heat attack at only 55 and his mom had a massive stroke at 28, so family history-wise he is pretty screwed. Luckily both test came back fine and eventually he was diagnosed is an anxiety disorder. However, he did have very high blood pressure and cholesterol both of which he takes medications for. Now, hopefully, he’ll stick around to see his grandkids grow up to give him great grandkids.

Great read and I am glad your OK. Yes healthy is recommended isn’t it? The only problem is that sometimes your job and family tend to make you work a little to hard, or longer to get everything accomplished in todays world. If you don’t get everything done then someone else will. So now a days that’s what you see on every counter at every 7/11 or gas station are all these “healthy” drinks filled with god knows what to give you the extra energy you need to get through another day.

It used to be the coffee but now I see more and more of the energy drinks that are pushed by all kinds of young athletes also. And many are ladened with caffeine.

But the main thing your post brings up and it ’s a great reminder is to take care of your heart. An amazing organ that is the motor of our body.

Now the grumpy guy above Mr Chute was just over at my blog yelling at me that he came here got all positive and then I brought him down. Boy oh boy wait until I get over there :-)

Enjoy your Sunday John and try and get in some rest and enjoy the family today. That means away from the computer, now go……. get……. JOHN………. the off button is right to the right….click …… ;-)

It’s really difficult to relate these frightening thoughts to yourself even when you are having symptoms.

    Hi again John,
Reply back on your comment to me. The doctor did not put me on any meds for the acid reflux. I do have a bottle of Rolaids Antacid / Calcium Supplement now. I only take this if the heartburn acts up on me. I am doing pretty good. Since I started to walk more, I have not been having the pain in my chest. My husband bought us an Elliptical Machine to add more exercise for our health. I do like this over the treadmill. I will admit that I was lacking in moderate exercise and it is so very important. Glad you are ok John. :-)

My brother was 36 when he had his heart attack with symptoms just like yours. He blew it off too, blamed it on the party he went to he night before and the 5 mile run he had ran in the cold. He is fine now after double bypass surgery. He never smoked, didn’t drink much, ran 5 miles a day and several marathons a year. His problem was high cholesterol which he was not aware of even though everyone in our family has it. He was young and vibrant and didn’t think he needed a doctor since he never felt sick.

I’m glad you are okay and also glad that you went to the doctor even though a trip to the ER was warranted. At least you got help.

Agree with Glenn also regarding the energy drinks – many of them have warnings on the labels but anyone can buy them!

I had an EKG last time I went to the Dr.’s – not because anything was wrong, but because she wanted to get a baseline for future reference. Not sure it it was necessary, but better safe then sorry. Mine was normal.

I hope you are feeling better and that it is nothing too serious. I was thinking you should have gone straight to the ER when I was reading this! I hope you learned your lesson. :)

I just found your blog through twitter and was entranced by our story here. What a scare! I blog about cellulite, so naturally I do a lot of research about fat and diet. I was surprised to find there is an overwhelming amount of data that supports the theory that trans fats and NOT saturated fats lead to heart disease. Wouldn’t that be a kicker. All this time we’re eating low fat, vegetable oil stuff when we could have been eating butter and cooking with lard! I hope you’re feeling better. I’ll stop in soon to read Part 2.
