A Nightmare On Valentines Day

Happy Valentines Day!

I woke up in a cold sweat, eyes stinging from the salty perspiration, running from my brow. I sat up quickly. As I wiped my forehead with my bed sheet, a cold chill ran down my spine. I turned, eyes squinting from the light sifting through the blinds. As I’m looking at the clock on my night stand, I felt my stomach drop. “What day is it?”, I thought? OMG! It’s Valentines Day. I flippin forgot Valentines Day! Disoriented, I tried to backtrack in my mind the events leading up to today. Could I have REALLY forgotten V-Day? My wife is going to be one unhappy camper. Scratch that, I’m going to be one unhappy camper. In fact, I might have to pitch a tent, in the back yard!

Panic Time

I scrambled to get out of bed. I had a million thoughts rushing through my head. I need to come up with a good reason to slip out of the house at dark-thirty, Sunday morning. Who am I kidding, no matter what I say it’s going to be totally obvious. “No honey, I’m not going to get your Valentines Day gifts, are you joking?” That’s just not going to fly. As I’m trying to quietly rush around, get dressed and think of a good reason why I’m heading to the store when the rest of the world is sleeping, something dawned on me. What day is it again? I went to work yesterday…wait a minute..today’s Saturday! A calm came over my body, starting at the tip, top of my head, all the way to my toes. It’s SATURDAY! Tomorrow’s V-Day! And then a second thought entered my scrambled brain. I had stopped on the way home Friday night and picked up a card and a heart shaped box of chocolates. Crisis over!

My wife and me last summer.

Don’t Mess With Tradition

My wife and I have long standing Valentines Day traditions. I get up, cook breakfast and serve it in bed. I always have a card, flowers and a box of chocolates. We finish the day with a wonderful meal. The key word here though, is chocolate. CHOCOLATE. That was the center of my worries just moments before. My wife wants her box of chocolates, come hell or high water. No excuses. Forget the card, she can pass on the flowers, but by golly there better be a box of chocolates or somebody is going to pay. AND that somebody is me. But it’s all good, John’s got it under control. I breathe a sigh of relief.

So, that’s how my weekend started yesterday. How about you? Are you ready for Valentines Day? Do you have any special traditions?  If you’re sitting down with your first cup of coffee, reading this, just realizing it’s V-Day, I FEEL FOR YOU. Better think of a good reason to run to the store! Don’t worry, your secret is safe with me. :)

I thought it would be fun to research some V-Day facts and some historical events that have taken place on February 14th, so here goes:

Valentines Day Facts:

Well, John, you must have been greatly relieved when you realized you actually hadn’t goofed up and forgotten Valentine’s day. I think you ought to REALLY impress your wife and make it Valentine’s Day on some other day of the year as well!!

Relieved, I was! I frequently cook her breakfast in bed and occasionally send her flowers at work. I surprise her with things to do, places to go, frequently. We both try to keep it interesting. Like anything else, a relationship takes work, but it’s worth it. :)

Good thing you were just disoriented there. My husband and I exchange cards and spend the day together if we can. If we get candy, we wait until after V-day to save a little money. Gifts are good anytime. What says it has to be right on that day? We spend so much at Christmas and now my new prescription cost $400 a month so we’re trying to cut back at least a little on things. We have so much that spending time with each other is more meaningful now. Happy Valentine’s Day! Enjoy the chocolates! I did get some chocolate candy for my Sunday School class since Valentine’s Day is on Sunday this year. I think they’ll like that.

    Hi John,

aren’t you relieved? Haha, Happy V-Day and I sure hope (for you) that V-Day is not the only day you treat your special someone with something sweet.

Personally I think V-Day is a bit overrated as you should not wait for one specific day to get your loved one something nice. Yes, I get into the entire V-Day hoopla but it is not a surprise as it is expected.

Do you know what I mean?

My experience is that, yes women love V-Day and they are excited but the unexpected surprises on a random day for no good reason are received even better. Not saying that you should ditch V-Day, that would be a bad mistake… ;)

    Happy V-Day everyone.

I agree Apollo, I think V-Day is over-rated too. Don’t tell my wife that, though…sorry honey! :) It’s current form was created by the greeting card industry, for Pete’s sake!

My wife and I try to keep things interesting with random acts of kindness. I wouldn’t say everyday is like Valentines Day, but we do surprise each other with things we know the other will appreciate.

Great observations Apollo! Thanks for all the support, it’s much appreciated!

John I am so glad you realized that it was Sat. and didn’t go rushing out to buy yet another card and chocolates. I am with your wife, the chocolate is the most important thing. I have to buy my own but that is just fine. Hope you have a great day. Actually this year, I got paid to try some chocolate through a survey company. Such a great deal.
Have a good one. Loved the Valentine’s days facts too.

You had me going at the start John. But you can always use the excuse, hey I’m a guy. (It never works). In all seriousness, you have one beautiful bride and sounds like your Valentines tradition is a great one. You both enjoy it and remember why it is you both love each other.

So ladies love chocolates more than flowers? LOL
I am still a single man but I always make sure that during Valentines Day, I give something extra special to my loved ones.

Valentines Day is not just for married couples or lovers. You can send a flower to your mother or sibling or to a friend. The Hearts day should be celebrated by everyone in the world not just for a one day event or for a month festivity. We need to show and give love for the rest of our lives.

Happy Valentines Day to you and your wife!

We don’t go to overboard on Valentine’s day. We got the kids a card each, some Resses and a small chocolate heart.

I got my husband a card, a chocolate heart and a coffee travel mug.

And guess what my husband got me? The highly publicized “Snuggie” It’s actually pretty nice and comfy for lying around watching TV.

I solved the problem about having to remember about buying gifts for birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, or any other real or imagined holiday or special event…are you ready for this ground breaking secret system to male peace of mind?…..sign over your paycheck to your wife. That way when she wants a present, flowers, or any type of assorted jewelry or scrap booking supplies she can give you the money and send you to the market to buy it. ;o)
