I have never been a big breakfast fan. For years after childhood, I avoided breakfast like the plague. I’m just not hungry in the morning. Food is not the least bit appealing to me at dark-thirty when I rise out of bed. This remained true until a couple of years ago. I was researching weight loss and came across several articles on the importance of starting off your day with a good breakfast. I have been a faithful breakfast eater ever since.
Eating breakfast is now second nature. If I miss it, I suffer all day long. I find myself craving snack food and I eat more at every other meal. On the flipside, if I eat a good breakfast, I am less hungry and tend to eat far less.
5 Reasons You Should Eat Breakfast
- Kick Start Your Metabolism – When you skip breakfast your body senses the lack of fuel and slows down to conserve energy. This means you will burn less calories than if you had eaten. Sort of the opposite of what you want to happen if you’re trying to loose or maintain your weight, right?
- Help You Feel Full – Eating breakfast will help your body feel satisfied and keep your urge to binge, under control.
- Provides You With Energy – When I get up in the morning I usually feel sluggish and lacking energy. After breakfast I feel an increased level of energy. This energy boost will help your body burn more calories while carrying out your daily activities.
- Helps Maintain Your Body Weight – Eating breakfast tends to help keep you from eating larger lunches and dinners, as well as excessive snacking. This will obviously reduce your total calorie intake, helping to keep the pounds off.
- Set A Good Example – If you have kids, eating a good breakfast will help teach them a life long healthy habit.
Here are some of my breakfast choices:
- Bowl of Oatmeal w/ a piece of fruit
- Whole Grain Toast w/ Peanut Butter
- Egg Sandwich on Wholegrain Toast
- Herbalife Nutritional Shake
- Lowfat Yogurt and and a small orange
- A cup of Cherrios and a 1/2 grapefruit
Do you eat breakfast every morning? Why or why not?

I eat breakfast, but sometimes it’s just a snack. I’m not usually ready first thing in the morning to eat breakfast..

Breakfast is the most important meal. Why? You have not eaten for a few hours last night because you went off to sleep and now you wake up to break the fasting. That’s basically the reason why it is called “breakfast”.
According to medical studies, skipping breakfast can cause real damage to one’s brain. People who usually do not take breakfast are irritable and unproductive. It is better to eat breakfast late than to have no breakfast at all.

Hi John,
It is very important to eat our breakfast every morning, along with your multivitamin. I do eat my breakfast for the same reasons you have shared with us on your list. A full belly also makes me happy and satisfied. I must say I do like all your breakfast choices. My favorite of course is the Herbalife Nutritional Shakes.

John, Great post. You are spot on with your suggestions, and the recent comments are great. I forgot the, “breaking the fast” thing. I have a breakfast recipe, for everyone. 1 serving, Oatmeal cereal. Then add, some peanut butter, Yogurt, and Fresh Fruit, to taste. You may substitute, protien powder, for peanut butter, but I like my peanut butter! This gives you a almost perfect “Zone” meal.
One question though, Oh nutritionmeister…Do Bloody Marys work, to break the fast?
Peace.

Breakfast has always been one of my favorite meals because the choices are all so good. It is more fun to go out for breakfast and have all that bad stuff but you have to live every now and then. Your breakfast choices are great. I usually have a bowl of cereal that is low calorie with some fruit or another. I like to eat blueberries as much as possible because they are so good for you.

I absolutely love breakfast but often don’t have enough time to properly prepare what I’d love to eat… so often my breakfast becomes something simply like a banana. However, I find that if you prepare it ahead of night (or have it all out waiting for you), it’s a lot easier to have a proper breakfast the following morning.

So I take it, Coffee and a cigarette would not be a completely balanced breakfast. But I do add a vitamin
Actually I do love breakfast, but I don’t eat it until late afternoon, does that still count as breakfast, being it is the first meal of the day? I also wondered if McDonald’s officially ends breakfast at 10:30, but Denny’s across the street never stops serving breakfast, who would be right? I need the answers John!
OK I am acting up, been commenting a lot tonight and starting to sound like Steven Wright. The comedian that asked you questions that made you say hmmmm. Like why is the time of day with the slowest traffic, called rush hour? hmmmmm

Great reminder about the fact that not eating breakfast will ruin your metabolism. Fasting diets train your body to store fat and eat muscle. It goes back to our ancestors that had to deal with feast or famine scenarios as a way of life. Back then when a famine hit it was the thin muscular people that died first. That is why our bodies slows its metabolism when it feels it is being subjected to a famine or fast. So yes by all means, enjoy that healthy breakfast. Take care.my friend. ;o)

I certainly regret it when I mix my breakfast, usually by around 12 my stomach is growing and I feel terrible, but having breakfast makes me feel 100% better, I find that my concentration is far better and I can get through the day at a more relaxed and less stressful way.

I never ate breakfast after i got “smart” enough to get up ten minutes before my mother, so I could tell her I had already eaten breakfast! I’d never eat anything before 3:00 and then not stop until bedtime. But a few months ago I started eating a good breakfast, including protein. I admit I feel better. Oddly, I get hungry for lunch sooner, so i eat a small snack before luchtime. In general, I feel a lot better in the morning and I eat less altogether. I definately have more energy, and keeping my blood sugar up makes me feel better all day- proving once again that Mom was always right and I wasn’t so smart afterall!

I believe that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Don’t miss it because it’s where you can get enough energy for the day. School or work can be very demanding, and without a filled stomach, how can you think?
