Introducing A New Kitten Into Your Home

Storms first day

We have a new addition to our family today. His name is Storm and he is an adorable little cutie. We brought him home this morning and spent the day playing with him and introducing him to our home and his siblings. Missy was immediately curious and ready to play. Her problem is, she doesn’t realize how big and strong she has become. She’s like a bull in a china cabinet! Precious is a little more stand offish. I don’t think she knows what to make of our new kitty. She has spent most of the day watching from a distance.

By the end of the day, Storm was getting used to his new surroundings. He is so lovable! He spent hours curled up in my lap today! In fact, he is wrapped in a blanket, in my lap, as I am typing this post! So cute!

Here are some tips for introducing your new kitty to your home and other pets:

  • Let your adult cat / dog smell the pet carrier or box used to bring home your new kitten. Your animals need to learn the scent of your new kitty.
  • Take you new kitten around your home and let them investigate the rooms.
  • Supervise the first visit between your kitten and your other pets. In our case, an adult cat and dog. Don’t let the other animals bully the kitten.
  • Slowly introduce your adult cat and or other pets to the new kitten with supervised visits, increasing the length of time with each visit. This will allow them to get to know each other. Don’t leave them alone at first.
  • Set aside some space for the new kitten for it’s food, water, toys and litter pan. We are using a guest room for this purpose.
  • Make sure you don’t ignore your other pets. You might try giving some special treats to the others when handling the new kitty. If you are handling the kitten, you might have your spouse or children pay some attention to your other pets. I don’t know about yours, but our “kids” get jealous if the others are getting attention.

Following these tips should help you to have a smooth transition when introducing a new kitten into your home. What has been your experience with introducing a new kitten into your household? Have any additional tips? I look forward to hearing your two cents!

Here are some pictures from Storm’s big day.

    Hi John,
Congrats to your new kitty. Storm is a little cutie. We have 3 cats and 1 girl dog. It is so neat to see the cats around our dog. She just loves them.

    It’s cute!!!
We used to have pet cats when we were kids. My mother would bring home stray cats she found roaming. Hehe…
But now, I can’t let my kids have pet cats coz’ my youngest has allergy.

Cute kitty. Right now we are pet free – I’ve only ever had cats all my life. But we are not rushing into getting another one. We have to take more time to consider our options.

Hope all the pets have fun together. Great tips too! :)

The kitten is so pretty! My daughter also wants a cat but we still hesitate but I hope this Christmas we’ll make our dad buy it!

I couldn’t say no to my son when he brought home an abandoned kitten. He has a terrible allergy which gives him nightly clogged nose. But he wanted to give the kitten a home.
