In the heat of the summer, there’s nothing I enjoy more than fresh organically grown vegetables from our garden. Tomatoes, green peppers, cucumbers and yellow squash. It doesn’t matter. It’s all good! Whether I’m eating a raw tomato straight from the garden or sauteing squash and zucchini, I’m in heaven.
We had a great crop of tomatoes this year. We grew some Cherries, Better Boys, Early Girls and a few Roma’s. One of my favorite things to do with tomatoes is make tomato sandwiches. Fresh sliced tomatoes, a little onion, light mayo and toasted whole wheat bread. That’s what I’m talking about! Of course, we also throw them in salads, make home-made salsa, marinade them in Italian dressing and just eat them all by themselves. Nothing beats a home grown tomato.
Saute Some Garden Goodness
Our Yellow Squash and Zucchini plants produced an abundance of fruit this year, as well. I like to saute them in a little olive oil, basil, garlic and onions. This makes a wonderful, healthy side-dish. We also had a few really nice egg plants, which we promptly made into Egg Plant Parmesan. Oh, so good!
The only disappointment this year was our pepper crop. I’m not sure what happened? Our bells, jalapenos and banana peppers all came in under sized. Additionally, we didn’t harvest any where near what we usually would get. BUT, they were still awesome! We toss them in salads, use them in recipes and just eat them raw.
It’s All About The Herbs
Last year we started growing some herbs for the first time. We now grow Basil, Oregano, Rosemary, Cilantro and Mint. We cook all summer long using fresh herbs. At the end of summer we make Basil Balls and freeze them for winter use.
Time To Roll Up Your Sleeves
Of course, gardening does not come without some hard work. First of all, you need to prepare the soil. We add organic matter from our compost pile and till the soil before planting. Because we don’t use herbicides, weeding is a must. To help keep the weeds down and the moisture in, we mulch around the plants. We also don’t use pesticides. Instead, we use Rotenone, a natural, non-chemical solution to keep the pests at bay. It works well. At the end of the day, it’s all worth the effort. Especially when you get to kick back and eat some of the fruits of your labor.
Fresh Garden Veggies, No Chemicals Necessary
The rewards of organic gardening are many. Fresh, delicious vegetables. Chemical free food. A nice, relaxing way to spend some time each day. And a tremendous savings on your food bill! We estimate a savings of several hundred dollars per year in our household. So, next year, why not plant yourself a little garden? Already have one, what do you grow?

There is nothing better then eating fruit and vegetables from your own garden. They have much more flavor and save you money. Living in Australia we are about to head into spring so it is a good time to start preparing our summer plantings.

I agree, home grown veggies have much more flavor. Good luck on your summer garden!

This is one of the reasons why I’m looking forward to having my own place; it’s hard to grow some of your own food living on campus!
I feel like I have an enormous amount to learn though. Have you by chance read ‘All New Square-Foot Gardening’ by Mel Bartholemew? I found it lying around at home and skimmed through, and thought it looked like a great way for a beginner to get started. It lays out instructions for raised-beds and a grid system.
Enjoy the fresh produce! My favorites are the cherry tomatoes!

My first apartment only had a 10×10 patio. I grew a veggie garden in pots. I had tomatoes, green peppers, cucumbers and jalapeno peppers. The entire patio was covered every summer! I can relate to you wanting your own place!
I have not heard of ‘All New Square-Foot Gardening’ but it sounds worth checking out. I’ll have to snatch a copy for myself.
I love cherry’s as well. I usually eat them right off the vine. Nothing better on a hot summer day.

I love fresh veggies. I just shopped earlier this morning for some at one of the local grocers. Hats off to any and all that have the patience for gardening. They look so beautiful and I’m sure they taste just as good.

I love ‘em too Roschelle! I shop for organics at Trader Joe’s. Great produce at reasonable prices. I agree, it does take patience to garden. But, I find the rewards out weigh the trouble!

Fresh vegetables are the best! Broccoli’s my favorite! It’s nice to know that you’ve worked hard for these to grow. It makes it eating much more delicious. Too bad the peppers didn’t grow so well.

We used to have fresh and organic vegetables in my childhood because we live in a rural area then. Now, many years older and living in an urban area, we have no choice but buy them from the market. We really do not know how those veggies got produced. I hope they are not of genetically modified varieties.

It makes me nervous buying organic vegetables from a regular supermarket. I too wonder about the origin of the produce and how it was grown. All you can do is trust that it really is organically grown without being genetically altered and without the aid of chemicals and pesticides.

This is right up my alley, John: garden-fresh, homegrown veggies. I visit the farmer’s market every Saturday and load up with the fresh tomatoes, cukes, peppers, and my new favorite, pluots.

I enjoy fresh veggies straight from the garden. I could eat salads everyday. Each year my husband and I discuss making a veggie garden–maybe we will bring that discussion to reality next year.

I am now staying at urban area, with busy 8-5 work hour. With traffic jam mostly everyday and usually reach home at 7.30 PM. There are no much time for me to do some gardening. I miss my childhood time where I helped my father growing spinach, cucumbers and watermelon.

I have this neighbor in our promise who also grow vegetables and fruit bearing plants organically, this is nothing new to me. when you ate the fruits of durian for example, its very delicious. he has mangostin as well that taste so sweet. tomatoes and eggplants are ordinary are in abundance, as well as other leafy vegetable. very nice and chemical free, and probably because of its less chemical content might be good althogether for health.
