Family Movie Review: Marley and Me

Sandy and Me at the Dog-Gonest Dog Show 1993

Our family ventured out for dinner and a movie last night. Well actually, we caught the matinee and then had dinner. Yes, cheap movie tickets and a $10 dinner coupon. I’m lovin it! I know, I’m a miser!

My daughter REALLY wanted to see Marley and Me, so guess what movie we watched? Yup, you guessed it, very good! Overall I would say this was a good movie. AND for anyone who has ever had a life-long canine companion, you will quickly relate and relive some fond (and maybe not so fond!) memories.

Based on the best selling book by John Grogan, the story is transformed to the big screen as Marley and Me with the tag line “life and love with the world’s worst dog”. The story begins with John (Owen Wilson) and Jenny Grogan (Jennifer Aniston) planning their lives together, wanting to have kids, but deciding instead to adopt a cute little Labrador Retriever from the local rescue. They soon discover that this little puppy has a knack for mischief.

The movie takes us through the lives of the Grogan’s. As they have kids and build their family, struggle with married life, advance their careers in journalism, all the while dealing with their beloved, yet extremely badly behaved dog. There are some incredibly funny scenes with Marley destroying everything in sight. If you have ever raised a puppy, you will surely recognize some of Marley’s antics. I immediately began to think about my dog Sandy when he was about 3 months old. I had come home from work to find my Christmas tree pulled over, bulbs busted, light strands chewed and branches spread all over the house. This movie was able to bring back many fond memories of my Sandy.

Despite the previews showing all the funny, family-friendly scenes, this movie is rated PG (yes that means Parental Guidance) and is probably not appropriate for the youngest viewers. There was a family of 6 sitting in front of us and the five year old sat in his dads lap, facing ME for most of the movie, totally uninterested. Besides, there was some mildly suggestive scenes, a little cursing and some drinking. Nothing major, just thought I’d throw that out there.

Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston both gave solid, believable performances. Alan Arkin did a great job as John’s editor at the newspaper. And an unrecognizable Kathleen Turner had a pretty funny scene. In all, I would recommend taking your family to see Marley and Me. Be warned, it is a tear jerker, but is also filled with some funny, for-real scenes that will dig up memories of pets present and pets past.

Do you know if the movie was different or worse than the book? I have neither read the book or seen the movie, but you know how that often goes, where the book is fabulous and the movie stinks.

I once read the book, “The Pursuit of Happyness”, the story about a homeless man who went on to become a multimillionaire. Yet when we went to go see the movie, starring Will Smith, it was terrible TO ME, because it was so different from the book.

Anyway, thanks for the heads up. I think we’ll watch it one of these days.

Paul, I’m not sure how the movie compares to the book. To tell the truth, I had never heard of the story, until my daughter indicated she wanted to go see it. It was not a fantastic movie, but it was a good watch. It’s worth checking out. It sort of reminds me of an old school Disney movie. It was refreshing to see a Hollywood production that you don’t have to feel uncomfortable watching with your kids. A rare find these days!

    Hi John,
Thanks for sharing your review on Marley and Me. It is always great to find a good movie to watch with the whole family. I do like Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston as actors. I’m sure we will probably add this to our movie collection when it comes out in the stores. That is a pretty neat picture of you and Sandy. I hope your arm is doing much better now. Take care! :-)

Yes, I would definitely check it out! My arm is finally out of the cast. BUT, it still hurts and it is hard to move around freely. I need to start physical therapy, but have just had too much going on. Thanks Robin!

I read the book and am looking forward to seeing the movie this week. I actually got to pet one of the dogs in the movie that plays Marley when they came to Cleveland to promote the movie. Here’s the link to my post about it: http://zemeks.blogspot.com/2008/12/wonderful-wednesday-what-great-surprise.html

On my side of the family – we have a tradition of going to a movie on Christmas day afternoon as a group. We narrowed it down to ‘Yes Man’ or ‘Marley and Me.’ ‘Yes Man’ ended up receiving the most votes – so that’s what we saw …
But after reading your review, I know I have to see this one too!

My girlfriend really wants to see this movie, now maybe I will let her rope me into seeing it with her.

I saw Yes Man on Christmas day also ( my family has the same Christmas afternoon tradition as Dawn) and I thought it was a great movie with a good message. As for being a family movie, however, there is only one scene that I would caution parents about – it involves a frisky grandma and the removal of dentures. I think you can gather the rest of the scene if you let your imagination run wild …

Jeff – Yes Man is also on our list, but we will probably wait for the DVD at this point. Thanks for the heads up!

Hi John my mom told me the other day that she saw Marley and me and that the book was way better. She thought that they dragged out the sad parts in the movie too much. Either way though I love labradors.

Was it a rescue shelter that they got the Lab from? I could have sworn it was a puppy farm, which was my main complaint about the movie. Puppies are cute and all, but I will never buy one as long as thousands of unwanted dogs are being put to sleep every day in our shelters.

Blake, I read that the movie folks had some last minute negotiations with PETA and changed it to a rescue. It appeared to me to be a rescue.

Marley and Me is on our list- we’re dog freaks with two of them.

We opted for Bedtime Stories this time around, though. If you get another coupon, I highly recommend it. Adam Sandler’s great.

Thanks for your review of this movie. My 2 year old son stops in his tracks every time he sees the commercials and I’ve been debating on bringing him. After reading this, I think I’ll wait till it comes out on DVD and see if he’ll sit through it at home. At least here, I can turn it off or let him do something else. :)
