John,

Pets are great. In CS Lewis writings, he had a concept of animals different than taught in schools today. He viewed that animals were meant to be domesticated as parts of family of humanity, rather than wild. He also viewed the spiritual outcome of a domesticated animal was entirely related to the spirituality of the family. I thought it was an interesting read.

When my children are old enough we will most likely get a dog. For right now they get to enjoy Grandma and Grandpa's 'Ronny the dog.' I do like cats, but some of the family is highly allergic. Oh well. Have a good one.

Regards, Matt

Great post! I was anti-pet for the longest time and relented just a little on my wife's insistence that she own a cat. I found the sickest, most pathetic runt of the litter I could find (the seller said that it wouldn't last two weeks). It was with us for a little more than 18 years.

We now have a beagle (which is kind of like a cat) we found at a rescue and I'm finally warming up to owning a pet.

@Viveca - I always love to hear about people adopting their pets from shelters and rescue's. We adopted our current furry friends, our Dog Missy and our cat Precious. We think Missy is Rot/Shep/Lab too! She looks like a Sheppard, Roti mix, but has webbed feet and is an excellent swimmer. Gengus Kitty, thats great! Thanks for sharing the joys of pet adoption with us! Do come back and visit often!

I am all for animals! We have a bird (Peetie) and Velvet our 12 year old Rot/Shep/Lab/? Then I started working on a fund-raiser for my local shelter and RingDogRescue.org and somehow that turned on the adoption tractor beam. In the past 3 months we added Gengus Kitty an 18 lb Persian and my first cat. Then we found Albert a 2-year old Bichon Frise running wild – collar – no tags. Did find his owners who were never home and delighted to have us adopt him.

Each time one newbie came home I was concerned. Each time they have added more joy to our lives. Kitty sleeps on my pillow and purrrrrs me to sleep everynight. Albert is comical! He keeps my husband and I in stitches laughing. His play drive is unstoppable! He has Velvet moving more – this is good and has Kitty on the move – also good ‘cause he needs to drop a few lbs!

Been doing a lot of research on the health benefits of pets, humor and laughter and clearly we live longer and enjoy it more thanks to friendships of the 2 footed and 4 footed persuasions!

I think our house has room for one more … and if you are out and about and near your shelter this weekend … why don’t you head on in. I am sure that your heart has room for one more too.

That's a great post! I'm a dog lover, so I wanted to add that if you get a dog, it's just as important to research the breeds since they vary so much. Many people don't like dogs simply because they had an experience with a breed that didn't match their lifestyle.

I'm definitely a dog person.
I've found that females are much better and easier to look after than the males (yes even neutered). I've had 6 dogs over the years, sometimes 2 at a time and the top ones were always the females.

I've heard that with Shelties that it's better to get a male though.
